Parking Violations Fines
There are two types of
parking violation charges. The first is the extra parking fines that are
imposed on vehicles that did not pay for paid parking areas or for short or
extra parking time. The other is parking fines that are imposed on vehicles
that are parked illegally according to traffic regulations offenses.
Extra Parking Fines
This fine (commonly referred
to as parking meter citation) is 4.500 -krónur. If the citation is paid in full
right away, it is 3.400-krónur. If the charge is not paid within 14 days after
the citation date, the fine goes up from 4.500-krónur to 6.750 krónur. Charges
that remain unpaid after 28 days following the date of citation goes up to 9.000-krónur.
Parking Violation Charges
Parking Violation charges
are imposed on vehicles where a parking violation, such as parking in a marked
no parking zone, parking on a curb or too close to a walkway, or other more
specific offenses according to Article 109. Traffic laws no. 77/2019. It is
currently 10.000-krónur, but if paid in full right away it is 8.900-krónur. If
the charge is not paid after 14 days after the date of the citation, the fine
goes up to 15.000-krónur and fines that remain unpaid after 28 days after the date
of citation goes up to 20.000-krónur.
Parking Violation Charges- Parking in a handicapped
parking space
The fine for parking in
marked handicapped parking spaces without a valid disability card is
20.000-krónur. If paid in full right away it is 18.900- krónur. If the charge is
not paid within 14 days after the citation date, the fine goes up to
30.000-krónur. Fines that remain unpaid after 28 days goes up to 40.000-
krónur.
Contest
A party may request to challenge
the decision of the citation. An application to contest the citation shall be
entered within 14 days from the date the ticket was laid on the vehicle and
will be answered within 14 days of receipt.
Appeal
It is the right of the
party to request an appeal of the determination of the citation within 28 days
from the date of the citation. General processing time is 2-4 weeks.

1.
It is recommended to
request an appeal of the determination of the citation within 28 days from the
date of the citation. General processing time is 2-4 weeks.

2.
When a party is not the
registered owner/keeper of the vehicle, it will simplify the process to have
the registered owner´s name, social security number, address, phone number and
email address made available. If the party is the owner/keeper of the vehicle,
it simplifies the process that their phone number and email address is provided.

3.
When requesting an appeal, it
is important that the party has in their possession, documents that can
strengthen their case. Such as a copy of the paid parking meter ticket or
receipts for repairs/towing of the vehicle. These documents should accompany
the request for an appeal. Documents can be submitted to the following email bilastaedasjodur@bilastaedasjodur.is or through general
postal service within seven days. The case then goes into processing. There is
no need to submit a copy of the citation (parking ticket).

4.
Bílastæðasjóður may obtain confirmation of the information that is
presented during the appeal process. Information can be confirmed from: The
National Register, Leggja.is. Iceland Transport Authority, City Web-view, and
other resources depending on the nature of each case.

5.
Bílastæðasjóður may obtain information from the sheriff´s office
regarding the issuance and time validation of handicapped parking cards. It is
important that the name and social security number of the disability card holder
are available if it is other than the registered owner/keeper of the vehicle.

6.
Bílastæðasjóður will investigate the determination from the servers of
the citation and will utilize photographs of the scene to make a decision
during the appeal process.

7.
If an appeal for a parking
violation is from a police officer´s citation, the process will be forwarded to
the police chief of the capital to be investigated.

8.
Once a request for an appeal
has been received, extra late fees are mandatory in accordance with traffic
laws throughout the processing time. The penalty and fees will be cancelled if
the appeal is validated. If the appeal is denied, the extra charges will be
reduced back to the original penalty that had been initially imposed before the
request for an appeal. An exception is for those who made payments in full
within three working days from the date of the citation. Parties are reminded
that they have the option of paying the fine despite requesting an appeal and
getting a reimbursement if it is validated.
